2007/2008 Board Members
President: Cynthia Cruver Cynthia is a founding partner at GCDirect, a Seattle based advertising agency that specializes in
strategic, measurable marketing for consumer and high-tech clients. Prior to GCDirect, Cynthia was a
principal at Three a.m. Direct Response Advertising where she served telecom clients as well as high tech
and medical industry businesses. Previous to 1998, Cynthia served as a Director of MarcComm for several
consumer companies including Sunterra Resorts in Orlando, FL where she joined over twenty distinct
resorts under one brand umbrella. In tandem with her focus on marketing, Cynthia is an enthusiastic real
estate investor and recently sold her first (and last) restaurant, an Italian bistro in the Westsound
region. She currently resides on Vashon Island with her husband and several fuzzy dependents.
Past President and Market to the Max Co Chair: Sharon Long Baerny Sharon was SDMA president for the 2006/2007 year, Marketing Chair the year prior, and an assistant to
the Marketing Chair the year before that, giving her three years of experience in planning and marketing
Market to the Max. When not helping to grow the SDMA into a successful, dynamic organization, Sharon runs
We Know Words, a copywriting agency focused on helping businesses grow through marketing that talks to
customers, not at them.
Vice President: Sue Engdahl Sue has been in the printing and graphic arts industry for 29 years in the Seattle area, and
is currently an Account Executive at Cenveo, Washington’s largest printing and mailing facility.
Sue uses her many years of experience to partner with her clients in producing a quality product
that delivers on time and making sure that everyone has a good time in the process. Last year,
Sue was VP of Operations for the SDMA, helping to organize the Job Board and streamline
procedures. When not indulging in putting ink on paper, Sue enjoys biking, sea kayaking and
gardening in sunny West Seattle.
Secretary: Karen Gernhardt Karen has held marketing roles in technology companies since the early 1990’s, and is
currently Lead Generation Manager at Express Metrix where she manages all direct response and
demand generation activities. Karen has been involved with the Direct Marketing Association for
4 years and is enthusiastic about the prospect of becoming an active board member. As a
graduate of Washington State University Karen enjoys spending time watching Cougar football, but
has many other varied interests as well!
Treasurer: Sal Canino Sal is the current Treasurer and relented without too much resistance when asked to serve
another term. He is the owner of TRC Staffing Services, Inc, and the company's mission is to
assist businesses with their contingent staffing, direct hire, and on-site management needs.
Prior to TRC Sal spent almost a dozen years at McCallum Print Group helping clients with their
direct mail, fulfillment, and printing needs.
Marketing Chair: Stuart Gordon Stuart spent his youth in Southern California skate boarding, hanging out at the beach and
performing music in various underground clubs. His musician parents had rebelled against their
conservative New York families and ran off to the West Coast where the “art and music scene was
happening.” After graduating in the mid 80s from Otis School of Art and Design with a BFA
degree, he began working in Los Angeles as an independent graphic designer and art director for
many advertising agencies and corporations including: DDB, Disney Consumer Products,
Suissa/Miller, Bowes Dentsu, Toyota and Warner Bros. to name a few. In 1999 he joined The Hacker
Group, one of the Pacific Northwest’s leading DM agencies, to art direct and work with their
roster of Fortune 500 clients. Professionally, he brings more than 20 years of experience in
direct response, advertising, DRTV, identity design and creative strategy.
After hours Stuart still enjoys rocking out in his band and spending time with his wife,
daughter, two cats and their fluffy golden doodle.
Membership Chair: Doug Seto Doug has more than 20 years of executive business management experience, as well as
expertise in administration, finance, marketing, operations, sales and strategic planning.
Prior to SharpDog, a new marketing services provider, Doug was Managing Partner at Adinfonitum
Incorporated, an e-marketing solutions firm, which he sold to e-Dialog, Inc. of Boston.
Adinfonitum provided e-marketing services to Alaska Airlines, Bank of America, Carnival,
Northwest Airlines, Shurgard to name a few. Prior to Adinfonitum Doug served as General Manager
at Systematix Controls Incorporated, a worldwide leader in process control for the pulp and
paper industry. He increased sales to Fortune 500 companies including International Paper,
Georgia Pacific, Weyerhaeuser, Boise Cascade, Willamette Industries, Mead Westvaco, and Bowater.
Doug also expanded sales internationally, and oversaw the development and introduction of new
products to meet customers’ ever changing needs. Prior to Systematix Controls Incorporated, he
held senior sales and marketing positions with PACCAR, Incorporated. In civic affairs, Doug is
on the Boards of the Chief Seattle Council, Boy Scouts of America, Navy League of the United
States, Northwest Kidney Centers Foundation where he is Vice President, Puget Sound Blood
Center, University of Washington Alumni Association and Washington Athletic Club. He is a
member of the Rotary Club of Seattle having served on their Board as well as various leadership
roles with the Seattle Rotary Service Foundation and Seattle Rotary Mariners. Doug earned his BA
degree in Economics from the University of Washington.
On-Line Marketing Chair: Norman Guadagno Norman is currently Chief Marketing Officer at ZAAZ where his responsibilities include
corporate brand and communications, marketing strategy, strategic partnerships and high-level
client engagements. Prior to join ZAAZ, Norman led a marketing team at Microsoft Corporation
focused on the developer audience. He has also served as Vice President of Marketing at Qpass
and as a Senior Director of Marketing at Oracle Corporation. During the past decade he has
brought dozens of software products and services to market, rebranded and repositioned companies
and products, and helped drive thought leadership across multiple technology sectors. Norman
received his Master's degree in Psychology from Rice University and a B.A. in Psychology from
the University of Rochester. He resides with his family in Redmond, WA.
Email Marketing Chair: John Kottcamp John leads Ascentium’s marketing services practice with an in-depth understanding of both
the art and science of integrated marketing gained through nearly two decades of global
expertise including prior executive positions with McCann Worldgroup, Gateway, T-Mobile and
Lufthansa. He has helped build and grow long lasting and profitable customer relationships for
companies through successful engagements incorporating Strategic Planning, Market Research,
Analytics, Direct and Interactive Marketing and Advertising into media neutral multi-channel
programs utilizing print, direct mail, e-mail, web, catalog, branded content, retail POS, mobile
and viral/word of mouth marketing programs. John earned his B.A. from the University of
Wisconsin – Madison and prior to settling in Seattle, made his home in such diverse places as
Munich, Madrid, Miami, San Francisco and San Diego.
Events Chair: Brad Douglas Brad has worked with three direct response agencies and one high-tech firm in his 20-year DM
history in Seattle. His responsibilities and experiences have given him a deep knowledge of
direct marketing at nearly every level. And, as a Sr. Manager with VERITAS Software he gained
valuable perspective and insights with regard to the client-side needs and pressures. Brad has
developed and managed successful DM programs in a variety of industries such as high-technology,
healthcare, insurance, financial services and more. Brad works for Direct Resources Group (DRG)
– an acquisition focused / ROI-based direct mail agency. His focus is Account Services and
Business Development. Brad’s passions are problem-solving, adding value and helping his clients
to be heroes.
Market to the Max Co Chair: Brian Ratzliff Brian is a co-founder of WhatCounts, Inc. - a permission-based email marketing firm - where
he leads the marketing and business development functions. For over ten years he has been
building brands, forging strategic relationships, and driving revenue for Internet pioneers,
such as ShareBuilder Corporation -which became the second fastest growing online brokerage in
2000- and Starwave Corporation where he was on the marketing and business development teams
responsible for ESPN.com, NBA.com, NASCAR Online, and for a time, NFL.com. He holds an MBA from
the Ivey School of Business, University of Western Ontario, Canada and a BA from Trinity Western
University in Vancouver, Canada.
Public Relations Chair: Jeff Wenker Jeff has been writing about and marketing technology since 1992. At prominent public
relations agencies during a transformative period in the industry, Mr. Wenker worked on a
variety of campaigns including the launch of Palm Pilot; the introduction of Reel.com, the first
movie website; Pantone's color management tools for the nascent world of online shopping; and
VeriSign's acquisition of Network Solutions. While managing global PR and communications
programs for publicly traded companies he developed broad marketing experience spanning many
disciplines and industries. Mr. Wenker is a graduate of the University of California at
Berkeley.
Sponsorship Chair: Eric Snip Eric is Director, Strategic Marketing at Naehas, Inc., a silicon valley based marketing
technology firm. He has over twelve years experience in the direct marketing and high-tech
industries working with the likes of Hewlett Packard, Washington Mutual, and Nordstrom to
improve return on marketing investment. He holds an MBA from the Leavey School of Business,
Santa Clara University and a B.S. from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.
Eric lives in Seattle with his wife and 3 beautiful children.
National Liasion Chair: Ann Jensen Warman Ann heads up brandUNITY, Inc, an award-winning creative services and marketing firm that
focuses on print, web, interactive, and emerging media. Ann has been in the creative services
and marketing industry since 1989, servicing a broad range of vertical markets. She has taught
college level required courses in visual communications and advertising design, and has been
immersed in computers and communications technology most of her life. During 2006, brandUNITY
designed and built the Market to the Max website and eNewsletter. A 12-year resident of
Bainbridge Island, Ann avidly tracks internet technology trends in her spare time. See her blog
